Class of 2021 quarterback Drake Maye committed to North Carolina on Friday, flipping his pledge from Alabama to the Tar Heels. According to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Maye is the No. 56 overall player in the 2021 class and the No. 6 pro-style quarterback.

He is ranked even higher by 247Sports, coming in as the No. 32 overall prospect and No. 3 pro-style quarterback — and the No. 1 prospect in the state of North Carolina.

The 6-foot-5, 210-pound signal-caller is the son of former UNC quarterback Mark Maye and the younger brother of former UNC All-American forward Luke Maye. He plays at Myers Park High School in Charlotte, N.C.

So what is UNC getting in the 247Sports four-star quarterback? Inside Carolina spoke with experts who have scouted and watched Maye play in person for their take on the latest Tar Heel pledge.

247Sports National Director of Scouting Barton Simmons: “At the quarterback position we’ve learned to trust production. Drake Maye put together a level of production and efficiency that is as good as the 2021 class has to offer. He’s big with functional athleticism and a strong arm. He’s also a player that got some early validation from college coaching staffs. As a junior his wide receiver corps was loaded. It’s going to be really interesting to see what he can do with some of those guys gone as a senior. If he has another huge year, that will make a pretty strong statement about where he stands in the national pecking order.”

 247Sports National Recruiting Analyst Charles Power: “Maye is highly accurate and operates very efficiently in his high school offense and in 7-on-7 settings. He processes quickly and is able to make anticipatory throws with consistency. He’s big-framed and should continue filling out once he gets to college. Seeing him in person earlier this month, the ball came out of his hand cleanly and he showed good arm strength to all levels of the field. He’s more of an in-structure pocket passer but is a solid athlete with his basketball background. Factoring in his phenomenal junior season and how he’s looked in-person so far this offseason, Maye looks like one of the best quarterbacks in a deep 2021 cycle at the position.

And he’s got the numbers to back it up. You’ve have to like his size and arm talent but he also shows the athleticism and off-schedule creativity you want. His vision and processing stand out and you can see the intangibles are there”

Inside Carolina Recruiting Analyst Don Callahan: “Drake Maye is a big pocket passer who has the calmness, intellect, anticipation, and vision to effortlessly dissect a defense and march his offense down the field. He has the arm strength and enough accuracy to make all the throws; in particular, he enjoys dropping it in the bucket on fly routes. He has a quiet confidence and doesn’t get rattled in games.”
